Common mistakes in at-home care for a white-looking smile

At-home smile care can help limit surface deposits and improve the appearance of teeth, but only when products are used sensibly. The most common mistakes come from trying to speed up results: brushing harder, using more product or combining several methods without a plan.

1. Treating V34 as permanent whitening

The V34 corrector works optically. Violet colour reduces the visibility of yellow tones, but it does not permanently change the colour of dentine or remove calculus. Use it as a cosmetic addition, not as the basis of oral hygiene.

2. Replacing brushing with oil pulling

Rinsing the mouth with oil does not mechanically remove plaque from every tooth surface. It also does not replace interdental cleaning. Read more in our guide to whether oil pulling replaces brushing.

3. Brushing too hard

Heavy pressure does not remove discolouration faster. It can irritate the gums and contribute to wear on tooth surfaces. Brush gently, for the appropriate amount of time, with a toothbrush suited to your needs.

4. Applying too much toothpaste

More toothpaste does not mean better cleaning. Consistency, technique and brushing time determine effectiveness. An excessive amount only makes the product run out faster.

5. Using products in the wrong order

For a 3-in-1 set, the recommended order is oil, toothpaste and then V34. Applying the corrector before brushing means the product will be removed while you brush.

6. Expecting the same result on every tooth

Fillings, crowns and veneers do not respond to products in the same way as natural enamel. The natural shade of teeth may also be uneven. If one tooth is clearly darker, ask a dentist to assess it.

7. Trying to remove calculus at home

Hard calculus should not be scraped off with home tools. It requires professional removal. Cosmetic products may act on surface deposits, but they do not replace scaling or air polishing.

8. Combining products with aggressive home methods

Baking soda, acids and random mixtures may irritate the gums and increase sensitivity. Do not combine them with whitening toothpaste in an attempt to speed up results.

9. Not taking a break when sensitivity develops

If you develop clear pain or a reaction to cold, do not increase how often you use the products. Reduce the intensity of your routine and seek dental advice. You can also read our guide to the causes and care of tooth sensitivity.

10. Buying the largest set without analysing your needs

White Duo is enough for people who need toothpaste and V34. White Trio is more suitable for those who genuinely want to practise oil pulling. A larger number of products only makes sense if each product will be used.

How can you build a sensible routine?

Start with the essentials: brushing, interdental cleaning and regular check-ups. Then add one element, observe how your teeth respond and only expand the routine afterwards. Consistency matters more than intensity.
