Oil pulling with braces can only be an optional extra. It does not remove plaque precisely from beneath archwires or around brackets and cannot replace interdental brushes or fluoride toothpaste.
Why do braces need extra attention?
Brackets, wires and ligatures create areas where food and biofilm collect. Oil may flow around them but does not provide the mechanical cleaning of a suitable brush.
A cautious sequence
- If your orthodontist agrees, oil pull before brushing.
- Use an amount you can control easily.
- Swish gently without strong suction.
- Spit the oil into a bin.
- Brush carefully above and below brackets.
- Clean under the wire with an interdental brush.
When should you ask your orthodontist first?
- Soon after braces are fitted or adjusted.
- With sores or severe irritation.
- After surgery.
- With a loose bracket or damaged wire.
- When gums bleed, swell or hurt.
Oil pulling cannot remove white demineralisation spots or tartar. These need professional assessment.
Can oil affect brace materials?
Materials and appliances vary. Avoid homemade essential-oil mixtures and follow product directions.
