The colour of the tongue can change because of coating, food, drinks, dry mouth or smoking. A yellowish shade alone is not enough to make a diagnosis.
What can you do?
Stay hydrated, brush your teeth regularly and gently clean the surface of your tongue once a day. Do not try to scrape the coating until it bleeds or use irritating chemicals.
When should you seek advice?
If the change persists, hurts or burns, or is accompanied by ulcers, swelling or other concerning symptoms, contact a dentist or doctor. It is also worth checking how to clean the tongue correctly.
